ENGAGING WITH DEATH AND DYING: THE ROLE OF THE HOMOEOPATH IN
PALLIATIVE CARE - Dr Richard Steele BA HDE MTechHom
Presentation to the KZN branch of the Homoeopathic Association of South Africa,
Dying is a natural process so there are many predictable practical issues and physiological and
psychological processes involved which we can learn about and prepare ourselves for in our role as
homoeopaths during the terminal phase of our patients’ lives.
As primary care professionals we are naturally drawn into care for our patients when they reach the
terminal stage of life for whatever reason. Our knowledge of all the dimensions of our patients
through the many hours we have listened to their cases, our knowledge of appropriate homeopathic
medicines to suit the individual picture being presented at the time, and our knowledge of
diagnostics and conventional medical practice enable us in such situations to provide compassionate
care as well as expert interpretation and explanation of the dying process and any related medical
procedures that may be involved as well.
The main aim of this presentation is to increase our knowledge, understanding and skills regarding
the dying process so that we can be more effective in our care for our patients as they make the
transition from life to death.
Michael Holmes, a hospice nursing specialist who has written an excellent book on the dying process,
provides a very useful insight when he writes: “the work of dying has to do with resolving all the
unresolved issues of one’s lifetime. This is a huge job and requires considerable effort.”
Knowledgeable and sensitive professionals can be of great assistance in this process. Topics covered
will include:
1. The role of the homoeopath in palliative care
2. Physiological and biological changes during the dying process
3. Signs that death has occurred
4. Guidelines for communicating bad news
5. Homeopathic medicine in palliative care
This workshop arises out of my experience accompanying members of my family, friends and
patients through the process of dying. Hard as this work is, I regard it as a privilege to be able to
support and accompany people in this transitional process. I regard it as a version of being a
midwife, a doula, for the dying. Engaging directly with dying and death is a very ancient and
archetypal process leading to a deep understanding and appreciation of the cycles of nature and the
essence of life.
