Breastfeeding is one of the first and primal bonds established between a mother and her child. However, 92% of mothers report problems with breastfeeding within the first 3 days, and a large proportion eventually rely on formula.  Sadly, this is most often due to poor or often incorrect information and advice given to them by their medical team.

Medical practitioners are generally uneducated about breastfeeding, breastfeeding advice, the biological norms around nursing infants and the implications about breastfeeding vs formula feeding their infants.  A lot of what we see in practice with infants and children often stem from gut and health problems such as reflux, colic, constipation and immune dysfunction.  These problems are often largely attributed to incorrect breastfeeding practices and often have lifelong implications.

This talk will cover information around breastfeeding, from the basics of breastfeeding and breastmilk, the biological norms, growth charts, changes in milk supply, introducing solids, as well as the homeopathic approach to ailments associated with breastfeeding such as mastitis, cracked nipples, thrush etc.

Dr Leanne Scott graduated from UJ in 2006, MTech (Hom).  After being in private practice for a few years, she spent some time as a part-time lecturer and clinician for the university of Johannesburg, lecturing gynae and obstetrics, as well as clinical homoeopathy.  In that time, Dr Scott also co-developed and taught the first post graduate course for homeopaths in the CAM treatment of infertility.  Her practice has mainly consisted of hormonal imbalances, infertility, the post-partum period and newborns.

After giving birth to her son, she realised the challenges of being a mom, from the physical challenges of birth and breastfeeding, as well as the effects of being a working mom. After a personal battle with breastfeeding, she became passionate about protecting the breastfeeding relationship between a mom and her child and realised that as a homeopath, there is a severe lack in the knowledge regarding breastfeeding.  She also became aware of the blatant misinformation and lack of guidance and knowledge around breastfeeding across most medical professions.  As such, she regularly attends the annual international GOLD lactation conferences for up to date information and research regarding prenatal, postnatal care and breastfeeding.  By supporting the breastfeeding relationship, she has seen a marked improvement in the general health outcomes of the growing infant and child in her practice.
